I originally moved to Belize in 2007 to pastor a church in Spanish Lookout. It was soon after that I got involved with a small church in the village of Selena near Spanish Lookout. Church in a small Spanish village like this plays a large role in the evenings, providing a place where people gather, socialize, and pray.
People gather there many evenings in a week and light is very essential in this setting. I then realized their total offering some weeks was used to provide gas to operate their generator in the evenings. I thought there must be a cheaper way to provide light, especially with the amount of sunshine in Belize. I started checking out different solar solutions to lighting this church and realized that solar power is quite expensive. It was then that I looked into the possibility of making our own panels.
After doing extensive research and by much trial and error, I started producing solar panels in my garage. One of the first ones that passed my testing was installed on the roof of that little church in Selena where it is still providing light today. Since then the business has grown extensively and although we still manufacture small panels, most of our panels are now imported from the US. We now have the capability of doing very large systems as well. My own house is now solar-powered. This is how Solar Solutions Ltd. came into being.
